1. INTRODUCTION
-----------------
Thank you for your interest in BRiNDYS BRiNOTES.
This application allows you to put adhesive notes at your desktop using
Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP and NT.
BRiNOTES can be used under the following environments:
- adhesive notes for all users of one single computer,
- for one single user on a computer shared by multiple users,
- shared notes for everybody at a local area network, being all of them
able to edit and read them,
- private notes, which follow the owner to the networked computer he might use.
2. NEWS IN THIS VERSION
------------------------------
- Better support for Windows XP, NT and 2000.
- Documentation has been translated into English.
3. BRiNOTES LICENSE AGREEMENT
--------------------------------
Brindys Brinotes can be stored in CD-ROMs, file servers or any other
shareware channels. In this case, SFXNOTES.EXE or BRINOTES.ZIP must
be kept intact.
BRiNOTES can be installed on any computer for free, without time limits.
Disassembly, or inclusion into other applications (except for SiCURE),
sell or rental of BRiNOTES is extrictly prohibited.
4. CUSTOMIZATION
-------------------
4.1 Notes bin.
When one note is no longer needed, use the "Destroy this note" option. The
note will be removed, without the possibility to be restored.
If you want notes to be stored temporally in a notes bin, use the "Activate
notes bin", at the "Configuration" menu. On the icons try will appear a
figure representing the bin. From then on, to delete a note, use the "Send
to the notes bin" option.
After that, you can decide whether you want to restore those delete notes
or erase them definitely. Use the menu options: "Restore notes from the bin"
and "Empty notes bin".
4.2 Language.
BRiNDYS BRiNOTES can be easily translated. By now, it works in: Spanish,
Catalonian, Valencian, Galician, English and Brazilian. To use the application
in any of those languages, use the "Lengua * Llengua * Language" option
present at the Configuration menu.
Do you want to translate Brinotes into your language? It's really an easy
task. You can also get a registered version for your help. Contact us
to get the translation kit.
4.3 Icons tray window.
To show or hide the icons tray, use the "Show icons window" option at the
Configuration menu.
4.4 Notes header.
Notes can have Windows style or be just a rectangular note. To select one of
those modes, use the "Show notes header" option at the Configuration menu.
When the header is visible, you can click and drag notes, and access the
options menu clicking on the small button placed on the header.
When the header is hidden, you can access the options menu by right-clicking
over the note. To drag notes, click first on an empty space in your desktop,
then drag the note by clicking inside the note.
4.5 Users.
BRiNOTES can be used in some different ways: allows you to have different
notes for each user, shared network notes, or shared notes on one single
computer.
4.5.1 Notes for one single user
If you want BRiNOTES to execute only when one determined user opens a
Windows session at certain computer, stop first the program choosing the
"Exit" option, and after that click Start, Execute, and write the following:
brinotas:/m/1
That way, BRiNOTES will only run when the currently logged user opens a
new session on the computer. When te computer is used by other users
(they enter a different logon name, user name, or network user name) the
application will not be available, and notes will not be shown.
4.5.2 Notes for all users
If you want BRiNOTES to execute sharing notes among all users that open a
Windows session (this is the default option), stop first the program choosing
the "Exit" option, and after that click Start, Execute, and write the following:
brinotas:/m/*
That way, any user will see the notes.
4.5.3 Local area network - sharing notes
If you want that all users from a local area network share notes among them,
so any of them can read any note from the rest, select one computer from your
network (a file server, or the one that usually is always available), create a
new folder, for instance, C:\BRiNOTES and share that folder in the network
with the name BRINOTES and with Total Control (or Change) privileges to all users.
Stop now BRiNOTES choosing the "Exit" option, and after that click Start, Execute,
and write the following:
brinotas:/m/r\\\
Being the computer's name where the folder was created, and
the name used to share the folder. For instance, if you have shared at the Mickey
machine the folder C:\BRINOTES with the name BRINOTES you should execute:
brinotas:/m/r\\mickey\brinotes
Now execute this same instruction at all the computers where BRiNOTES has been
installed in your network (for them being able to show the notes). From then on,
all notes will be saved at the network resource, and they will not be visible when
the Mickey computer is not powered-on.
You can create as many resources as needed, that way, you can have many groups of
computers that share notes among them, but not with other computers in the network.
4.5.4 Local area network - private notes
If you want that each user in the network has private notes that only him can read,
and that notes go with him to any computer he might use, create a shared folder as
explained at "4.5.3 Local area network - sharing notes"
After that, stop BRiNOTES choosing the "Exit" option, and after that click Start,
Execute, and write the following:
brinotas:/m/r\\\*
Being the computer's name where the folder was created. After the machine's
name enter a slash \ and an asterisk * (BRiNOTES will transform that in the user's
name). Now, share in the network a folder for each user that will use BRiNOTES, and
use as resource name the username. If the username has more than 12 characters, enter
only the first 12 of them.
4.5.5 Deactivate network support
If you used any network options, and now want to use BRiNOTES back in local mode,
that is, saving notes in your hard disk and not in the network, stop BRiNOTES choosing
the "Exit" option, and after that click Start, Execute, and write the following:
brinotas:/m/L
(the L in uppercase)
4.5.6 Problems executing the configuration examples
If you are using the 3.51 version of Windows NT Server or Workstation, or experience
any problems when executing the examples, replace the brinotas: string with the following:
"c:\program files\brinotas\brinotas.exe" /URL:""
for instance, brinotas:/m/* must be executed as:
"c:\program files\brinotas\brinotas.exe" /URL:"/m/*"
Also note that you must start all the examples always with:
brinotas:/
but not with:
brinotes:/
5. COMMON USAGE
----------------
Here you have the instructions to use BRiNOTES.
Experienced Windows user can skip this chapter.
5.1 Edit
BRiNOTES use rich text format for buiding the notes' text (simmilar to
WordPad or Microsoft Word), allowing you to enter text with different
colors, fonts and sizes.
- To change the size, color and font for the text, use the options under
the "Format" menu:
"Font and color (selection)"
This option opens a windows where you can change different aspects of
the text previously selected with your mouse (by clicking the mouse, drag
and release the button).
"Font and color (whole note)"
This option opens a windows equal to the previous one, but affects all
the text in the note.
- To move text from one note to another, or to/from WordPad, Microsoft Word
or any other rich text program:
First select the text to transport (by clicking the mouse, drag
and release the button). Once the text appears marked with a hilighted color,
click again over the text, and drag it to the other window (or program). Also
you can drop the text at other place into the same note.
- The most common editing keys are the following:
Control+N creates a new note
Control+O hides active note
Control+F4 hides all notes
Control+D deletes or sends to the bin the note
Control+Button "Hide note" deletes the note instead of hiding
Control+Left mouse button changes note's color
Control+C copy selected text to the Windows clipboard
Control+V pastes text from the clipboard
Control+X cut text (copy to the clipboard plus delete text)
Control+A select all text in the note
Alt+Delete allows to undo accidental changes
- To change a note's position in the desktop, you can click in the upper
bar with the mouse and drag. If you configured BRiNOTES to not show the bar,
you can also move the note clicking on its contents. If once clicked the
note doesn't move, but instead the text is selected, try the following:
click any empty space in the desktop, and try again to drag the note.
5.2 Printing
You can print the contents of one note each time. To do so, use the "Configure
printer" and "Print note" options.
5.3 Alarms
Each note can have an independent alarm (defined by a date, hour and minute). Once
the alarm becomes active, the user will receive a warning, and the note will be
presented (even if it was hidden).
Alarms can be customized, allowing the execution of any program in the moment
of the activation.
Also, you can select any sound file to be played when alarm becomes active. To
configure the alarm, click with the right mouse button over any shortcut, executable,
WAV file, etc., and select the option "Execute as alarm for BRiNOTES" (if it is
and executable) or "Define as alarm for BRiNOTES" (if it is a sound).
The evaluation version of BRiNOTES (not registered) doesn't have alarms.
5.4 Hidding notes
Sometimes it is interesting to hide all the notes in the desktop. You have some
possibilities:
To hide one individual note, use the "Hide this note" option.
To hide all notes present in the desktop, use the "Hide all notes" option, or
use the icon with the shape of a paper (in the icons tray window).
When there is any hidden note, the icons tray window shows a figure with the
shape of an open folder, with the text "Show hidden notes". Clicking this icon
will show again all the notes.
If you use BRiNOTES in a local area network, the notes will appear again if
any other user performs any change or creates any new note.
5.5 Notification area icon
Next to the Windows clock (right bottom corner of your screen) a small icon with
the shape of a yellow note appears. When you click the icon with the left mouse
button, a new note will be created.
If you click the icon with the right mouse button, the Configuration menu will be
shown.
The icon with a bulb shape is the notifications reminder from BRiNDYS Software.
There many applications (including GEDEX, BRiRESPA, TRASGO, BRiKY...)
show status messages. If you want, you can remove it (to never show again) by
clicking it with the left mouse button, and at the window that will be presented,
click the Options button, then select "Hide bulb icon". If you want, you can also
uninstall the notifications reminder, but in such case, the BRiNDYS Update website
(and also the BRiNDYS Fresh live update) will not work, and BRiNOTES will not be
automatically updated when newer versions of the software become available.
5.6 Icons tray window
Next to your notes, in the desktop, a small tool window is shown. This tray window
allows you to access all BRiNOTES features with less mouse clicks. Note: if you
disable this window, all features will still be accesible, it is just an aditional
and optional feature, not needed to enjoy the program. These are the icons contained
in the window (fom left to the right):
* New note.
Allows you to create new notes in the desktop (the same effect can be achieved by
clicking on the small yellow note icon next to the clock).
* Hide/Show.
Hides or restores all your notes.
* Configuration.
Displays the configuration and customization menu.
Among others, the "Exit" option is available here (stops the execution of BRiNOTES until
the next reboot of the system).
* Help.
When clicked, an informational note will be created automatically, including information
about the application and our contact information.
* Notes bin.
This icon is only visible when the notes bin is active.
Contains the options needed to restore and to empty the bin.
In case the icon is not shown and you want to activate the bin, use the configuration
icon, and select "Activate notes bin".
6. ABOUT THE FULL VERSION
---------------------------
The evaluation version is fully operative. For commercial reasons, some options
have been limited:
- Notes bin.
Only allows to recover one note each time. The rest of notes sent to the bin will
be erased definitely.
Only notes previously sent to the bin will be erased.
- Alarms.
You can configure the alarms, but they will never become active.
The registered version is the only version with alarms enabled.
6.1 How to buy BRiNOTES
Please click here to buy BRiNOTES.
7. HOW TO INSTALL BRiNOTES
--------------------------------------
BRiNOTES can be installed even by users with small computing skills.
To get the program installed into your computer, follow these steps.
1º Double click "My PC", and look for the file SFXNOTES.EXE or SFXNOTAS.EXE
It is possible that you have the ZIP compressed version of the installer, in
such case the file will be called SFXNOTES.ZIP or BRINOTES.ZIP, and you will
have to expand it using WinZip (www.winzip.com) or other simmilar software.
2º Double click the EXE file (SFXNOTES, SFXNOTAS or SETUP) The installer
will start its execution, preparing your computer to use BRiNOTES.
3º The installer shows a welcome screen. Choose your language at the left
side of the window, by clicking the buttons. After that, clisk "Next" to
continue the installation.
4º The BRiNOTES' license agreement will be presented. Click "I Accept" only
if you accept all the terms and conditions expressed at the agreement. In
other case, click "I DO NOT ACCEPT".
5º The installer will ask for a folder in your hard disk. There a new folder
called 'BRiNDYS BRiNOTES' will be created, and the program's files will be
stored inside of it. We recommend you to leave the default directory intact,
as it is the best place to install the product. Finally, click "Next".
6º After that, the installer will tell you that the application is ready to
be used. Click "Close" and the program will run.
Next time you start Windows, BRiNOTES will run automatically.
8. UNINSTALLATION
------------------
To uninstall BRiNOTES, click the "Start" button at the Windows task bar. After
that, click: Configuration, Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. A list of all
your software will be shown. Select "BRiNDYS BRiNOTES" by double clicking.
The uninstaller will be presented. After confirming that you really want
to uninstall BRiNOTES, the program will be removed.
If you have any problem using the uninstaller, you can also perform a manual
uninstallation: Look for the following files, and delete all of them:
BRiNOTAS.EXE BRiNOTES.EXE BRiNOTAS.DAT BRiNOTAS.INI LEAME.TXT
README.TXT LEME.TXT
and also all the files with any of the following extensions:
*.NOT *.XNO *.BAK
Remember that the SFXNOTAS.EXE, SFXNOTES.EXE, BRINOTES.ZIP or BRINOTES.ZIP
files (the BRiNOTES installer) allow you to reinstall all the files, as they
are compressed inside of it. So, before deleting it, decide if you want to
conserve the installer, just in case you would like to install again the
application in the future, or send it to a friend.
